Description

Showing a crowd of people on the grassy bank above the Waikato River watching a Maori canoe hurdle race during the annual regatta at Ngaruawahia in March 1917. Two canoes are taking part in the race, one of which is slipping over the hurdle set between to poles in the water. In the distance on the right of the view, other boats can just be made out either being rowed or paddled on the river. The far river bank is lined with trees with hills rising behind them.
