Showing passengers and crew abandoning ship to a waiting lifeboat after the French liner Sontay was torpedoed by a German submarine while en route from Salonika to Marseilles in May 1917. Some 45 of those aboard drowned, including Captain Mages who is just visible standing at the railing to centre right of the photo. He appears to be watching the men clambering over the railing and down the ship's ropes.
