Showing officers and men of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles occupying Rafa, Egypt, in 1917, preparing to hold horse races. The wooden framework of the scales to weigh the riders is seen to the left of a crowd of soldiers. In the left foreground two officers pay close attention to paperwork held in the hands of one them. They may be working out the handicap for each rider.
