Description

Showing the homes of Otira tunnel workers at Bealey in Arthur's Pass, Canterbury, in 1917. The Otira tunnel runs for 8.5km under the Southern Alps. Work on the tunnel continued during World War I due to concern that the German Navy might blockade the West Coast coal ports: the development of capability to move coal by rail to other ports was therefore deemed important to the war effort.
