The Hatsuse, which, was one of the greatest fighting machines afloat, while cruising outside Port Arthur on May 14, struck a Russian mine and was disabled. While waiting to he towed out of danger, the vessel struck another mine, and foundered within half-an-hour. The officers and crew of the Hatsuse numbered 714, and 300 of these were saved by Japanese torpedo boats.
