Description

Portrait of the Māori chief Maihi Parāone Kawiti [spelled 'Maihi Parone Kawit' in the caption]. His name at birth was Te Kuhanga, and he was the third and youngest son of Te Ruki Kawiti (d 1854) and his wife Kawa. Signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 using his birth name Kuhanga. Baptised on 27 Dec 1840, and known by his baptismal name (Maihi Parāone, or Marsh Brown) from that time onwards. Was a correspondent to Donald McLean.
