Bruce Weir, 77, grew up in the Christchurch suburb of Shirley, attended Shirley Boys' High School when it opened in 1957 as one of 156 students now known as First-Day Pupils, attended University of Canterbury and graduated with with a first-class degree in mathematics, then undertook a PhD in statistics, with a minor in genetics, at North Carolina State University in the US.
