Background: Iodine is an essential micronutrient that plays an important role in growth and development. Due to the low iodine content in New Zealand soils, iodine deficiency was common in the 1900s. The introduction of iodised salt in 1939 helped to improve with iodine status until the 1990s when iodine re-emerged again.
