An eleven-dog sledge used by the Ross Sea Party, led by Sir Edmund Hillary, to reach the South Pole in 1958. Hillary and his team were the first to reach the Pole by motor vehicle. They were the third to reach the Pole by land after Roald Amundsen in 1911 and Robert Falcon Scott in 1912. Hillary's original objective was to lay food and fuel depots for the main expedition group, led by Sir Vivian Fuchs, along the route to the South Pole.
