Description

Mr Stephen James and Elizabeth Gard were married in December 1874. Stephen, born in 1840, had come to New Zealand in 1864 and after a few months on the West Coast gold diggings he decamped to Western Southland, where his brother Richard already resided, and bought land. In 1874 he returned to England and there married Elizabeth, born in 1835. This photograph was taken in Melbourne, Australia, during the journey back to New Zealand.
