This two story wooden building was built in 1862 for an insurance company, Calder and Blacklock and in 1874 Petchell & Bell took over the lease. In 1877 Juno Petchell established Petchell Bros with William J. and Leonard W. Petchell according to the notices in the Western Star. John Petchell was born in Yorkshire England c1845 and in 1854 immigrated to New Zealand with his parents aboard the ship 'Stately'.
