Description

A dark grey and pink finished maihea (sinker) made from a waterworn quartzite cobble. It has pecked grooving around the major axis, where harakeke lashings would have been secured. A section has broken off on one side. Stone tool specialist, the late Russell Beck, notes it was heated at some stage, with a dark heat spall on one side. Russell identified the source of stone for this maihea as being local. Maihea were attached to fishing lines to sink baits and lures into deeper water
