Description

A natural waterworn pebble of dark green and olive takiwai/tangiwai, pounamu (bowenite greenstone) with feather fractures. It has high translucency in places with a schistose texture. Stone tool specialist, the late Russell Beck, noted the probable source of this pounamu as Fiordland. Takiwai/Tangiwai is the only form of bowenite greenstone found in Aotearoa New Zealand; it is softer than nephrite and is often almost transparent, with a glass-like appearance.
