A photograph of Carl 'Charles' Frentz. He was born in 1839 in Flensborg, which at that time was part of Denmark. Before moving to New Zealand, he worked as a sailor. On arrival here he worked as a miner at Orepuki, having arrived sometime around 1874, the same year he was married to Mary Frew, when he was aged 35.
