Description

A photograph of Carl 'Charles' Frentz. He was born in 1839 in Flensborg, which at that time was part of Denmark. Before moving to New Zealand, he worked as a sailor. On arrival here he worked as a miner at Orepuki, having arrived sometime around 1874, the same year he was married to Mary Frew, when he was aged 35. In New Zealand he went by the name Charles, to avoid any connotations from what was at that time seen as a Germanic name. After gold mining for a few years, the couple moved to farm...
