Description

The King Shag (Phalacrocorix carunculatus) of White Rocks, New Zealand, showing the iridescent plumage for which he is celebrated. When standing the King Shag measures 20 inches in height, but is actually 30 inches from tip of beak to end of tail, and he has a wing span of more than 40 inches. The male bird is only slightly larger than the female. The occurence of irregular patches of white feathers among the outer scapulars is found in no other cormorants in the New Zealand area.
