This colour photograph shows the pre-restoration mantlepiece in Kohi Kohi Cottage, also known as Te Whare Kohi Kohi or sometimes as Howell's Cottage. Te Whare Kohi Kohi is thought to have been the first European-style house built in Riverton, New Zealand. It was built in 1837–38 and is thus one of very few New Zealand buildings constructed before the 1840s.
