Nellie was born Ellen McKay the daughter of Donald and Elizabeth, née Reid, McKay in 1887 at Tihaka, Southland. She married in 1914 to Richard John Walker. Richard was born in Tasmania and came to New Zealand as a young man and worked in the sawmilling industry. They had a family of four. Nellie died in 1961 age 76 years and Richard also died the same year at 76. They are buried in the Riverton cemetery.
