Description

Shawl, paisley, from Scotland - Nova Scotia - New Zealand by Johanna Maitland (Matheson) 'Spray'. This shawl has a printed rather than a woven pattern. These were produced from about 1840 and by its design this one probably dates from about 1850. Printed shawls cost about one fifth of the woven ones and thus reached a much wider sector of society.
