Description

A cap badge for the 1st Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry). Formed in 1864 the 1st Mounted Rifles were the oldest mounted unit who served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) during World War One. The badge features a wreath made from two fern fronds and a ram's head at the top which symbolised the sheep farming yeoman who made up a majority of the unit.
