Description

An image of the Riverton Wharf (grouped with another harbour photograph). The wharf, a much debated structure; at the time there was even a conflict of opinion in regards to the best site. Rival parties favoured placing the jetty on the south side where the channel was deepest and where there was more shelter for vessels, but the other side was more accessible to the business parts of the town. The Provincial Engineer and Dunedin Harbour Master were called upon to help make the site decision.
