Description

New Zealand Wars memorial at the corner of Wakefield Street and Symonds Street. The memorial, unveiled in 1920, was dedicated as follows: 'In memory of the brave men belonging to the imperial and colonial forces and the friendly Maoris who gave their lives for their country during the New Zealand Wars, 1845-1872.' The statue is that of ‘Zealandia'. The memorial has attracted considerable controversy in recent years.
