Description

This memorial on the corner of Symonds Street and Wakefield Street was erected as a tribute to the imperial and colonial soldiers who fought for Britain in the New Zealand Wars between 1845 and 1872. It was sponsored by the Victoria League and unveiled in 1920. Sculptor Thomas Eyre Macklin won the final design competition for the monument in 1914.
