Shows open space to left with flagpole, two cannons and a Von Cohorn (or Kohorn) mortar, and two piles of cannonballs. This space overlooks a gully in left middle distance. At right a road leads away past fern-thatched huts to central distance, and in right foreground, small groups of soldiers in red jackets, and two Maori in cloaks, talk together. Flags flying amidst huts at right include a Union Jack.
