Description

This hei pounamu belonged to Katherine Mansfield’s younger brother, Leslie Heron Beauchamp, who was killed on 7 October 1915 while serving in the First World War. He was 21 years old. Leslie had been given the hei pounamu as a farewell gift by Dr Albert Martin and it was sent to Mansfield after Leslie’s death. It is carved from bowenite, a rare type of glass-like pounamu mainly found at the entrance to Piopiotahi/Milford Sound. Known to Māori as tangiwai (tear water) its longer name, koko-tan...
