"South Grove" was the home of Captain Stevens at Gummies Bush. It was built about 1860. The farm later passed to the following: Beck, Grant Ussher, 1908 Craigie Robertson, 1914 James Cormack, R McLelland. William Stevens was the half brother of John Howell, considered to be Riverton Aparima's first permanent Pākehā settler. William was born in 1821, in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England.
