Description

A group of people around the statue of Queen Victoria at Ōhinemutu , with the first St Faiths church behind (at left). Taken during the royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary) in 1901. The bust of Queen Victoria had been presented by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, to Māori at Ōhinemutu when he visited in 1870. It recognised the Crown's appreciation of Arawa support in the New Zealand Wars.
