Foundations for the low level bridge (Fergusson Bridge) were laid in June 1962. The third bridge in Cambridge’s history to have been erected on the same spot. The bridge was named after the Governor General Sir Bernard Fergusson who had family living at the Gorton Estate (Karapiro) in the 1870s. The bridge was opened in 1964 with the firm North, Swarbrick, Mills and Westwood winning an award for its design. The river channel lies in a low gorge.
