Mrs G.G. Stead (née Lucie Maria Wilkinson) was married to successful businessman, grain merchant and racehorse owner and breeder Mr George Gatonby Stead from 1876 until his death in 1908. For two decades George Stead was considerd the most succesful leading figure in business for Canterbury. George Stead and his wife bought the 'Strowan' property on Papanui Road in 1890.
