This is a photograph of the first Otautau Ladies Hockey team which formed on Friday June 9, 1911. Players supplied their own sticks and their first practice had roughly 20 women in attendance. Vernon Smith volunteered as the women's coach and he quickly had the novices at top skill level. By September, the team were dominating the Western Southland and Invercargill hockey competitions.
