The Alpha Motor Inn was built on the corner of Victoria Avenue and Broadway in 1970 for Betty and Bill Clarke. The sculpture Falling Water, by Fred Graham (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Tainui, 1928 – 2025), is visible on its street frontage. Graham was an art lecturer at Palmerston North Teachers Training College between 1957 and 1962. After the motel was sold in 2015, the sculpture was purchased for the city two years later.
