Traditional paleoanthropology explains the reduction of hominin body hair as a biological adaptation for thermoregulation. This paper proposes an alternative, cognitively-cultural hypothesis, suggesting that the differential retention and loss of hair may have been caused by a combination of external mutagenic factors and early cultural protection (primitive headwear and loincloths).
