Several of the instruments for high-speed radio telegraph reception and for radio telephony for the Post Office services at Wellington. Signals received are passed by telephone lines either to the Telegraph Office at the General Post Office, Wellington, or to the Toll Exchange, Stout Street. Aerials at Makara Radio Station for the jfellington-to-Sydney telephone service are maintained in good condition by periodical inspection in the manner shown in the photograph. The aerials themselves are known as arrays, and are placed direclionally towards the transmitting stations. H.M.S. Ripon, a Fleet Air Arm jerry, being launched sideways in a specially-dredged and prepared creek at the Faversham shipyard of Messrs. James Pollock and Sons. The Ripon has been designed for special work in Japanese waters in close support of the Allied air forces. On the right the foreman shipwright swings his axe to cut the rope which released the Ripon, seen on the left sliding into the water. (Evening Post, 28 June 1945)
