With the exception of the souther n half of the island of Sakhalin, ceded to Japan after the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, the parts of the map in black show the territories overrun by Japan from the time she began her career of aggression in 1931, 'when she seized Manchuria, until the height of her conquests in the present ivar. Burma and the Philippines were liberated this year. Although not shown in black, most of the Solomons and New Guinea were occupied by the enemy. In accordance with the Potsdam Proclamation, Japanese sovereignty is henceforth to be limited to the home islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, and a few minor islands.
