Frank Hofmann
A DigitalNZ Story by Courtney Johnston
New Zealand's artistic heritage has been so greatly enriched by tragedy. Frank Hofmann (František Simon Hofmann) is one of many artists, musicians, architects and writers who fled Nazism in Europe in the late 1930s and 1940s and wound up in New Zealand. Here Hofmann worked in several commercial photographic studios but also pursued his own work. His portrait of his wife, the writer Helen Shaw (Hella Hofmann) is one of my favourite modernist New Zealand photographs.
