In the 1949 Lady Wigram Trophy race, Sybil Lupp, driving an MG. She placed fifth in both the handicap and the championship events, and received a cheering reception from the crowd. Allison Buchan in Te Ara says "The first New Zealand woman to achieve national prominence in motor racing and to establish a significant automotive business, Sybil Lupp showed that the field of endeavour for women need not be a narrow one."
