First World War Postcards including embroidered
A DigitalNZ Story by Dylan Owen
"Embroidered silk postcards, expressing sentiments are distinctive tokens of World War I. The tradition of postcards, inserted with embroidered flowers on silk, predates World War I. During the conflict, the cards gained popularity with servicemen who used them to pass on their thoughts to wives and loved ones, from whom they were separated because of the War. Examples here include flowers, and the flags of the Allies - a popular motif at the time. Others were more sophisticated, sometimes featuring pockets holding miniature cards and silk pocket handkerchiefs. The French were the most prolific producers of these wartime mementoes. Accordingly, this card was sent from France and was addressed 'to Daisy with love from Charlie Aug 4th 1916'." Te Papa
