Grandad and Ice Cream!
A DigitalNZ Story by Sarah Hewitt
Frozen Products Ltd were famous for their Eskimo Pie and Frosty Jack Icecreams. My Grandad Kinley Harold Black worked there 1939-1956.

Frozen Products Limited was formed in 1924. You can read more about their ice creams on the New Zealand Ice Cream Associations "History of Ice Cream"
Grandad started at Frozen Products Ltd in 1938. His friend Alistair Scott had his fingers in many pies (literally too!) and gave him a job there.

Frozen Products Limited had two factories in Wellington: 210 Vivian Street and 25-29 Tennyson Street (Lorne Street). They sold the Lorne Street site in 1952 to the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board.

My favourite story from my Grandad is from his time at Frozen Foods Ltd where he ultimately became Technical Director.
He told me: whenever they pulled apart the giant vats where they made the ice cream to give them a clean and a service, if they found a part missing they would never worry. Sooner or later it would turn up accompanied by an irate letter from a customer who found it in their tub of ice cream.

Grandad's duties appear to have been varied - he even was in charge of getting quotes of signwriting.
Grandad's work at Frozen Products Limited meant that he did not serve in WWII. He knew others with different views to his own.
Albert William Coffey - Conscientious objector and flatmate
Grandad testified on behalf of Coffey in 1941. He did not agree with his views but believed they were sincere.

And because these things take you down a rabbit hole, newspapers confirm that Albert William Coffey eventually won his conscientious objector appeal. A fuller account of his testimony and Grandad's input is in the Nelson Evening Mail.
According to my Aunt, Bert Coffey was Best Man at my grandparents marriage in 1942. Doris Scott, Alistair's wife was Maid of Honour.
Grandad had a long membership with IPENZ and other engineering related organisations, serving on councils and Boards.

Grandad left Frozen Products Ltd in 1956 to become managing director of Turnbull and Jones. His friend Alastair Scott remained on the Board of Frozen Products Ltd until 1965. Alistair died, too young, in 1966 aged 53.
