The Tangiwai disaster

On Christmas Eve, 1953 the swollen Whangaehu River swept away the Tangiwai bridge. The approaching Wellington-Auckland night express rolled onto the damaged bridge. The engine and five carriages plunged off the bridge and into the river killing 151 passengers. Moments later the sixth carriage dropped into the water.
