On 10 June 1886 Mount Tarawera erupted, destroying the unofficial 8th wonder of the world, the Pink and White terraces.

Mount Tarawera spewed glowing scoria and cloud of ash was up to 10 kilometres high and a 17 kilometre rift appeared along the summit, spewing hot steam, mud and ash.

Many incredible stories of survival were told including over 60 people who were saved by taking shelter in guide Sophia Hinerangi's sturdy house. Upon surveying the extent of the damage in the next few days, entire settlements were found destroyed by the falling hot mud. It is estimated that 150 people lost their lives in this catastrophic event.
